Mardi Gras Like a Pro: 5 Tips for Staying Safe & Having a Blast

by Richard Hébert

Mardi Gras is right around the corner, and whether you’re bead-chaser, tailgating along the neutral ground, or enjoying a backyard boil with friends, one thing is for sure—it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

To help you survive and thrive during Carnival season, here are my Top 5 Tips for Staying Safe & Healthy while still having the time of your life:

🎭 1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Between the walking, dancing, and (let’s be real) drinking, it’s easy to get dehydrated. Alternate every alcoholic drink with a bottle of water, and don’t forget to snack throughout the day to keep your energy up. If you’re out all day, bringing an electrolyte drink can be a game-changer.

🎭 2. Pace Yourself with Alcohol

We’ve all seen it—the person who goes too hard before the first float even rolls. Don’t let that be you! Stick to one drink per hour, avoid sugary mixers (they hit harder than you think), and don’t accept drinks from strangers (and have a sealed cup/container). Also, eat before you drink—carb-heavy Mardi Gras classics like jambalaya and po’boys are great for fueling up.

🎭 3. Have a Sober Mardi Gras Plan

If drinking isn’t your thing (or you just want to take it easy), Mardi Gras is still 100% fun sober! Many locals go alcohol-free on parade days and still have a blast catching throws, listening to live music, and enjoying king cake. Bring your favorite non-alcoholic beverage (mocktails, soda, or just a killer iced coffee), and embrace the energy of the crowds—it’s electric all on its own! THC seltzers are also now readily available in the New Orleans area!

Avenues Recovery also offers a Sober Safe Spot along the Uptown and Metairie parade routes. Look for the white flag with a purple circle logo!

🎭 4. Share Your Location & Stick with Your Krewe

Parades can get crowded, and it’s easy to get separated from friends. Before heading out, share your iPhone location with trusted friends or family (Go to Find My > Share My Location). That way, if you lose your group, they can easily find you. Pick a meetup spot, keep your phone charged (portable chargers are lifesavers), and always be aware of your surroundings.

🎭 5. Dress Smart, Prepare for Rain & Protect Your Feet

Mardi Gras isn’t the time for brand-new shoes or fancy outfits. You’ll be walking miles over uneven streets, dodging beads, and standing for hours. Wear comfortable shoes (seriously, your feet will thank you), and layer up for unpredictable weather—one minute it’s sunny, the next it’s raining on your parade (literally). Bring a poncho or small umbrella in case of rain, and don’t forget sunscreen—yes, even in February!

Mardi Gras is all about letting the good times roll, and a little planning goes a long way in making sure you enjoy every minute of it.
